Several post-doctoral fellowships emphasizing palliative care and related fields are now accepting applications.




Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Research Fellowship in Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care


The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Research Fellowship in Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care seeks physicians, psychologists, doctorally-prepared nurses, social workers, and other clinicians who wish to prepare themselves for an academic research career in palliative care or psychosocial oncology. Fel-lows complete an original research project under the guidance of a Harvard Medical School faculty mentor, create a tailored curriculum in research methods, attend weekly fellowship seminars and works-in-progress, and become part of a rich and diverse psychosocial oncology and palliative care research commu-nity. University of Colorado Palliative Care and Aging Post-Doctoral Research Training


The University of Colorado announces openings for palliative care post-doctoral research fellows from any relevant discipline. Fellowships will be 1-2 years in duration, supported by a Ruth Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) T32 from the National Institute on Aging (NIA). The goal of this T32 is to prepare postdoctoral fellows for careers as researchers at the intersection of aging and palliative care. University of Washington Cambia Palliative Care Center of Excellence, Palliative Care Research Fellowship


The Cambia Palliative Care Center of Excellence announces openings for a Palliative Care Research Fellowship Program funded by a T32 Training Grant Award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Post-Doctoral Fellowships will be 1-3 years in duration. Applications are being accepted now. Fellows participate in active faculty research and receive mentorship to advance their own program of research. Training programs will be individualized for each participant and focus on the participant’s research. Participants become members of the community of scholars at the University of Washington and are provided with the full array of resources available within the UW Health Sciences Schools and the UW Medicine system.

University of Pittsburgh Post-Doctoral Research Opportunities in Palliative Care

The University of Pittsburgh announces openings for palliative care post-doctoral research fellows. Fellowships will be 1-2 years in duration, supported by either a TL1 training grant through the University of Pittsburgh’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute, a T32 training grant through HRSA, or a 2-year Special Fellowship Program in Advanced Geriatrics with a focus on Geriatric Palliative Care through the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Uni-versity of Pittsburgh in collaboration with the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. Fellows will bene-fit from being at an institution with well-established palliative care and research training programs, as well as a strong mentorship culture. They may choose to pursue a Master’s of Science in Clinical Research in addition to participating in post-doctoral training seminars. Key areas of scholarship include primary and specialty palliative care interventions, communication, decision-making, behavioral treatment of symptoms, and non-malignant palliative care.

Duke University Postdoctoral Fellowship in Integrated Palliative Care


The Duke Center for Palliative Care matches exceptional candidates with post-doctoral funding sources in the Duke Schools of Medicine and Nursing, as well as the Durham VAMC Health Services Research program. Fellows join a vibrant academic community on the compact Duke University campus, where academic initiatives are closely tied to clinical care and health system initiatives. The Duke Center offers opportunities for researchers with interests in aging, oncology, and health services research, with a special emphasis on population-based approaches to palliative care. In addition to support provided by each fellowship, the Duke Center for Palliative Care supplements funding for research and travel, and provides a rich source of clinical connections, mentors, and conferences. University of California San Francisco Division of Geriatrics Palliative Care Fellowship


The UCSF Division of Geriatrics and the San Francisco VA Geriatrics, Palliative, and Extended Care offer two fellowships with up to 10 spots that provide training opportunities for fellowship candidates interested in palliative care research. The first, an NIA-funded T32, recruits physicians and PhDs interested in research at the aging and palliative care interface. Prior T32 fellows include Rebecca Sudore, MD, Brie Williams, MD, and Krista Harrison, PhD. The VA Quality Scholars program at the San Francisco VA provides training in both research methods and quality improvement, and targets physicians, nurses, and psychologists. Prior fellows include Mike Steinman, MD, Laura Petrillo, MD and Rafael Romo, RN, PhD. Fellows in the T32 and VA Quality Scholars share coursework, small group sessions, and office space to create a community of fellows. University of Utah Pre and Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Cancer, Caregiving and EOL Care


The UofU College of Nursing offers two pre and two post-doctoral fellowships on an annual basis. Fellowships are typically 2 years in duration and support-ed by a T32 from the National Institute on Nursing (NINR). This T32 immerses and engages trainees in state of the science knowledge, cutting edge research designs and innovative thinking that address key questions in cancer, caregiving, and end-of-life care research. Fellows work with a collaborative community of nationally recognized faculty who have synergy and interdisciplinary research collaborations. University of Alabama at Birmingham UAB Cancer Prevention and Control Training Program (CPCTP)


The purpose of the program is to train individuals who are committed to becoming independent researchers in the areas of cancer prevention (including epide- miology, chemoprevention and behavioral science), cancer early detection, cancer outcomes, survivorship and palliative care. The CPCTP has charted a 30- year history of training cancer prevention and control researchers of the future, and has been supported by the National Cancer Institute for over three dec-ades (transitioning from an R25 to a T32 [CA047888]). Over the years, we have trained 154 pre- and post-doctoral fellows, ninety percent of whom are pur-suing careers in cancer research. We are committed to providing solid, interdisciplinary training to all our trainees. CPCTP trainees undertake a specialized curricu- lum that is tailored to their disciplinary and research interests, and conduct research related to cancer prevention and control. Our program includes didactic seminars, skills training and strong team-based mentorship with renowned investigators across the Schools of Health Professions, Nursing, Public Health, Medicine and the College of Arts and Sciences.
